Facilitator Lesson Plan

A Rural Generalist is a medical practitioner who is trained to meet the specific health care needs of rural communities, in a sustainable and cost-effective way. The Rural Generalist Framework approaches training in comprehensive general practice, emergency care, and advanced procedural and cognitive skills. Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Articulate the concept and expanded scope of practice encompassed by rural generalists

  2. Thoughtfully choose appropriate learning experiences in preparation for rural practice

  3. Modify their own education plans to incorporate rural generalism

  4. Adapt their plans to the community in which they wish to practice

Rob Epstein, MD
Program Director, Swedish Rural Program, Port Angeles, Washington

For the last 20 years Dr. Rob Epstein has practiced and taught rural family medicine in
Port Angeles, Washington (which is located in the upper left corner of the map). Prior
to settling in Port Angeles, he worked on the Navajo Reservation, Southwest Colorado
and in Northern Pakistan. He received his medical training at the University of
Washington School of Medicine where he still teaches and is currently the Program
Director of the Swedish Port Angeles Rural Training Track.

Steps

  1. Recruit your teams. Ideally, 4 teams of 3-5 participants.
  2. Schedule a room that can accommodate all your participants and AV to play the presentation.
  3. Distribute the Pre-Session link
  4. Download the Presentation Slide Deck.
  5. Review the Slide Deck. Be sure to look at the presenter notes.
  1. Arrange your participants into teams within the room.
  2. Facilitate your session by following the prompts in the presenter notes of the Slide Deck.
  3. Facilitate general discussion with the full group. Go over any lingering thoughts.
  4. Evaluate the materials on your experience.
