Abstract
Rural health researchers and health professional educators alike often conduct sound research and assess novel teaching methodologies. However, these models and the research are largely ineffectual on a macro level if the results are not disseminated to diverse audiences. This presentation will discuss the importance of disseminating your work as well as the various modes of dissemination with special attention paid to the journal publication process. The presenter will share a resource developed through the Rural Health Research Gateway to assist rural health researchers with disseminating their work to diverse audiences.
Following this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Articulate the importance of dissemination and the appropriate modes of dissemination given the desired audience.
- Describe the publication process, how to identify the best journal, and how to develop a writing team (authorship).
- Join the Rural PREP community of practice in rural primary care health professions education and training

Shawnda Schroeder, PhD, MA
Research Associate Professor University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences
Dr. Schroeder is a research associate professor for the Center for Rural Health (CRH) at the University of North Dakota (UND) School of Medicine & Health Sciences in Grand Forks. Shawnda participates in rural health research, directs state program evaluation, and supervises graduate student internship and practicum experiences at the CRH. Dr. Schroeder serves as principal investigator of the Rural Health Research Gateway, a website that provides access to publications and projects funded through the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy. Under the Mountain Plains Mental Health Technology Transfer Center, she provides training on rural mental health, leads web content development, and conducts research on stigma as well as mental health training needs. Her research interests include healthcare access, health disparities, workforce, and oral health. She is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Rural Health, is an elected member of the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences’ Research Committee, and serves on the research and medical education constituency group through the National Rural Health Association.
